Our Homestead is situated approx 8kms from Hakataramea River and 20kms from Waitaki River.
The Hakataramea River is the largest tributary of the Waitaki River. It rises in the MacKenzie Country and flows southward to join the Waitaki at Hakataramea.
It is world renowned for fly fishing in beautiful clear water.
Brown Trout predominate but Rainbow Trout and Chinook Salmon are also found along the length of the river. The average size is 1.5kg though trout up to 2.7kg are not unusual. Trout can be spotted and fished for using dry flies or nymphs to match the caddis or mayflies that are about. Wet fly fishing may also be productive. In April, trout will strike a fly which resembles the salmon eggs which are sometimes washed downstream. Season -Trout: 7 Nov - 30 April : Salmon: 7 Nov - 31 March (opens on the first Saturday in November)
Methods - Fly fishing only Bag limit Trout: 2
The Waitaki is a large braided river, with a flow second only to that of the Clutha River in New Zealand. Because it is used to generate hydro electric power, anglers need to beware of sudden fluctuations in the water level. The Waitaki flows over an unstable shingle bed. Willow trees line the banks in many parts. There are good sized Brown and Rainbow Trout and good Sea-run Salmon at the mouth.
Spinning is the most productive method. In the evening there is often a good sedge rise, especially below the Hakataramea confluence. Where the river is braided, some parts can only be reached by boat.
There are 7 Hydro Lakes and smaller natural lakes. They all yield good fish during the season.
